Vitor is an architect and urban planner, with a PhD at the intersection of spatial planning and public health. As a postdoctoral researcher in the Urban Public Health group at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, his research examines urbanisation processes in cities of the Global South, with a focus on how the spatial organisation of human settlements shapes health outcomes and relates to patterns of socio-spatial injustice. Ultimately, his goal is to generate scientific evidence to inform the design and shaping of healthier and more equitable communities and cities.
His work empirically connects layers of environmental data with demographic and health outcomes to better understand the spatial determinants of health and wellbeing. Drawing on fieldwork in Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, and Brazil, his methods apply geographic information systems (GIS) and open-source tools to collect and analyse geospatial data, combining top-down (remote sensing) and bottom-up (participatory mapping, household surveys, and community engagement) approaches.
Alongside his research, Vitor is committed to interdisciplinary, project-based teaching that cultivates complex problem-solving skills and critical thinking about the entanglements of space, power, and health in cities worldwide. At the University of Basel, he leads the course "Urban Health and Spatial Justice" (since 2025) and co-teaches the studio course Urbanisms of the Health Industry (since 2026), both within the Critical Urbanisms Master programme. He also co-designed courses and lectured at EPFL (2021–2024) and Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio (2016-2022).
