Welcome Professor Nancy Odendaal
We are delighted to announce that Prof. Dr. Nancy Odendaal has been appointed as the new UCT-Unibas Professor of Urban Studies. She will take up her position on 1 August 2024.
Nancy is an urban planner with a keen interest in contemporary cities, focusing primarily on the relationship between urban infrastructure, spatial transformation, and livelihoods. Her recent research has focused on smart urbanism and how that manifests in African cities. Her recent book, Disrupted Urbanism: Situated Smart Initiatives in African Cities (published by Bristol University Press in 2023), explores how technology interfaces with the everyday experiences and strategies of urban dwellers in cities of the global South. Nancy’s exciting research program will serve as the basis for her teaching in the MA in Critical Urbanisms course over the next five years.
